Ed Latta and I both had blinds on Tittworth slough though most of the time we hunted out of the same one. If we wanted to take more than one person we usually used two blinds. We watched ducks fly high over us all morning with a lot dropping into the woods to our east.
We filled a tow sack each with decoys and headed up there to try our luck. We carefully placed the decoys where there would be plenty of room for ducks to light and we backed against two trees.
We waited and watched and finally one old Suzie landed but we could not get a shot for the trees. After she started calling we were glad. That old duck had a rattling voice that would not be allowed in a calling contest.
A big bunch worked her and we were ready, killing one each. When they flew off Suzie went with them but only to return to the exact same spot. Again she called in a flock of ducks and we were ready. Now we had two each.
Again she lit in the same place and again we got one each to limit out for the day. We were sure hoping that old bean in the throat rattling duck would return but no such luck.
We discussed it for days with anyone who would listen. We finally decided that it was someone`s live decoy that had gotten loose. That made sense as she did not seem to mind shooting all that much. Anyway I will never forget that day and for sure not forger the duck with the rattling voice that could not even enter a calling contest, but she sure could call ducks.
