“Our friend the raccoon”

For years an old sow raccoon would come prowling our carport every night robbing the dog’s food dish.  If there was nothing in it she would get on the top step and look in the door.  We would feed her.  I tried to feed her by hand when she was on the step but I would chicken when she got within one inch.  I would drop it on the step for her.  She was never aggressive though.
One year she came for her hand out as we were specifically putting food out for her by then and had three babies with her.  She stood on the step until we saw her and came to the door.  She paraded around with them on her heels for a few minutes and left.
In about thirty minutes she returned without her brood.  She ate her dinner and left.  She had only come the first time to show off her babies I am sure.  Never before or since have I seen anything like it.
Our neighbor John Craddock had a hot wire around his garden and coons would still get in sometimes and he would trap them.  He would take them to Springhill bottom and release them.  Whenever the old sow disappeared we knew he had probably trapped her and hauled her off.   In four or five days here she would be right back on our carport.
I really think she would have let me feed her by hand had I not chickened out.
